We’re quickly approaching the one-month mark of this NBA fantasy season and I think it’s safe to say that it’s been quite a ride thus far. Here’s a quick rundown of the past, present and future.

Game watch:
4 games: ATL, CHA, CLE, DET, HOU, IND, MIA, MIL, NO, OKC, ORL, POR, TOR
3 games: BOS, CHI, DAL, DEN, GS, LAC, LAL, MEM, NJ, NY, PHI, PHO, SAC, SA, UTA, WAS
2 games: MIN

Waiver wire watch:

  • J.J. Hickson: starting for the moment, good source of points, boards and a smattering of steals and blocks
  • Carl Landry: cooled off last game, playing extremely well lately, shoots high percentages
  • Beno Udrih: still not owned in many leagues but thriving while Kevin Martin is out
  • Taj Gibson: decent producer while Tyrus Thomas is out, more appealing in deeper leagues
  • Toney Douglas: playing well with decent minutes, monitor Nate Robinson’s impact on his value
  • Rafer Alston: taking on heavy minutes, put up a triple-double this past week, remains valuable so long as Devin Harris sits
  • Drew Gooden: plays well with 20+ minutes, with Erick Dampier hospitalized Sunday, he started
  • Will Bynum: Richard Hamilton still seems a week or two away from returning, which means plenty of minutes for Bynum
  • Udonis Haslem: had a great line Saturday, continues to be solid PF, especially in deeper leagues
  • Rudy Fernandez: with Travis Outlaw out for a while, his minutes should rise
  • Darren Collinson: with Chris Paul out, he’ll put up decent numbers
  • Earl Boykins: played 31 minutes in first game, scored 20 points

Injury watch:

  • Marreese Speights (knee): tore MCL in left knee, out six to eight weeks
  • Chris Paul (ankle): could be out two to four weeks
  • Paul Pierce (knee): it’s just sore, but monitor his status this week
  • Erick Dampier (?): went to the hospital Sunday, check later for why
  • Shaquille O’Neal (shoulder): missed Saturday’s game without notice, a preview of what’s to come, should be OK
  • Tim Thomas (knee): hopes to play Wednesday, monitor him
  • Josh Howard (ankle): needs more time to heal, don’t expect him back until late December
  • Anthony Carter (hip): day-to-day, could return this week
  • Richard Hamilton (ankle): should play before December rolls around
  • Ronny Turiaf (knee): not close to returning yet
  • Troy Murphy (back): delayed return, could play this week
  • Pau Gasol (hamstring): should play before December
  • Hasheem Thabeet (jaw): should return this week
  • Jermaine O’Neal (hip): says he’ll play Tuesday, check his status
  • Mario Chalmers (shoulder): should be ready this week
  • Omri Casspi (ankle): should play this week
  • Hedo Turkoglu (hip): day-to-day
  • Tracy McGrady (knee): return date uncertain, but should see action before December
  • Manu Ginobili (hamstring): says it’s fine, should be ready to play this week
  • Kelenna Azubuike (knee): MRI on Monday, doesn’t look good, could be out a few months
  • Michael Redd (knee): will return within the next week
  • Al Jefferson (family death): will return this week
  • Courtney Lee (groin): set to return very soon, maybe Tuesday
  • Ryan Anderson (ankle): will play Monday, but so will Rashard Lewis
  • Brandon Bass (flu): day-to-day
  • Travis Outlaw (foot): out six to eight weeks
  • Deron Williams (family illness): should return this week
  • Antawn Jamison (illness): shoulder not an issue anymore, should be ready this week
  • Eric Gordon (groin): next Monday is most optimistic return date

Stock watch:

↑ Carlos Boozer: strong play continues

↑ Joakim Noah: ditto

↑ Brandon Jennings: enough said

↑ Elton Brand: absence of Speights should be good for him, but expectations should be held in check

↑ Andrew Bogut: no signs of back hindering his play

↑ Andrew Bynum: owners can enjoy big-time minutes and production for a little while longer

↑ Mo Williams: shooting very well lately

↓ Allen Iverson: signing of Jamaal Tinsley does not bode well for A.I.

↓ Leandro Barbosa: had wrist drained, doesn’t look like he’ll be healthy anytime soon

↓ Quentin Richardson: hot hand is lopped off for now

↓ Anthony Morrow: struggling after a string of solid games

↓ Wilson Chandler: sleeper tag in serious doubt

↓ Aaron Brooks: hints of inconsistency

What do you think of offering Wilson Chandler & Mike Miller for Elton Brand in a 12-team league? There’s some decent, albeit unspectacular options on the waiver wire in Tyson Chandler, Thabo Sefolosha, Dahntay Jones, Brandon Rush, Raja Bell, James Harden, Anderson Varejao, and Jared Dudley.

I’m also thinking of offering Al Harrington & Mike Conley for David West. I think with Tinsley joining the group in Memphis that the future for Conley doesn’t look as bright as it did a week ago.

  • generic

I guess I should add that both teams I’m offering these trades to have guys now out for a while, if not the season. The team with Elton Brand has Kelenna Azubuike. The team with David West has Mareese Speights.

  • Jason

@generic: I think you’re giving up a bit too much in both deals, though you have the right idea with targeting buy-low candidates. If you think you can make up for the loss of depth with each deal, they might be decent deals for you.

But especially if these teams you’re dealing with are hurting, you could probably get those players for less than you’re looking to give.

Miller’s a mystery with Jamison set to return, but he might still be a valuable fantasy player.

Yeah, things don’t look good for Conley, but he should maintain his mediocre value.

I hope it works out in your favor! Let me know if you work out a deal.

Redd is available from waivers, and I’m thinking of adding him for Gallinari. Yes, no?

  • Jason

@jwei: Tough call. I’m not sure this is the last time Redd will sit out a handful of games this season, and with the emergence of Brandon Jennings, he could take more of a backseat in the Bucks’ offense.

Gallinari definitely has more upside and will play more games, but he’ll have bigger swings, though his highs will be higher than Redd’s on most weeks.

If you are OK with the risk of more DNPs from Redd, go for it. Gallinari is the safer option though.

  • generic

I’d stick with Gallinari. The Knicks are going to continue acting as if they have a youth movement to influence someone, anyone to head to NY. Gallinari should get huge minutes all year.
