Quick hits, ‘The Keanu Edition’: NBA news roundup
by Jason on Sep.30, 2010, under Quick hits
Training camp is in full swing and that means there are tons of juicy morsels of information floating on the news wires. Starting-lineup changes, injuries, potential sleepers and other hints can often be picked up by keeping an eye on tweets and top-notch online resources like Rotoworld.com.
Here’s a quick recap of some interesting tidbits that may have some consequences for your fantasy drafts. We’re going to get some help from the man, the thespian, the meme: Keanu. Never thought you’d see Mr. Reeves in a post about fantasy basketball, did ya? Keanu will help us split up some recent bits of news into three categories: sad, meh and happy.
Sad:
- Tracy McGrady still “can’t put the knee aside, that’s the major issue”
- Chris Paul stopped short of declaring his knee 100 percent in a recent interview
- Baron Davis is out of shape
- Greg Oden still doesn’t have a timeline, doesn’t know if he’ll be back by Christmas
- Shaun Livingston‘s knee had to be drained this week, which doesn’t bode well for his prospects at fulfilling the sleeper tag some may have placed on him
- Kenyon Martin is taking his sweet time returning to the court — and he’s not happy with the Nuggets
- Mehmet Okur is at 70 percent and his return date is a mystery
- Corey Maggette could miss the entire preseason because of his bum ankle
Meh:
- Chauncey Billups is set to see his playing time cut back a tad, which means Ty Lawson sees the slightest bump in value, but don’t overreact
- Peja Stojakovic could see some time at PF this season; I could see some time yawning this season
- John Wall is still impressive, but the real 82-game season hasn’t started yet, and Gilbert Arenas is still on his best behavior
- Tyreke Evans, as everyone knows, has been working on his jumper, which could be good; but to take some air out of the bubble of excitement, he’s also set to handle the ball less
- Josh McRoberts could start at PF, Mike Dunleavy is healthy (and playing for a contract) and Magnum Rolle is athletic
- Joel Anthony could be the starting center for the Heat
- Josh Childress has the green light from three
- Jameer Nelson is healthier and free of rust
- J.R. Smith lost some weight
- Rashard Lewis probably will start at PF, but he will spend more time at his natural SF position
- Hassan Whiteside has put on 25 pounds of muscle, and here’s the video to prove it
Happy:
- Spencer Hawes, who ran with the Sixers’ starting lineup on Tuesday, is “kind of like Peyton Manning,” according to Andre Iguodala; he could start at C and push Elton Brand to PF on opening night
- Terrence Williams‘ stock keeps rising as coach Avery Johnson has some glowing things to say about the young man, who could start at SG (this could be a bit of a bummer for Anthony Morrow)
- Dorell Wright and Andris Biedrins are starting for the Warriors
- D.J. Augustin will likely start at PG for the Bobcats, trade talks and all
- Andrew Bogut could be further along than first thought
- Ray Allen might get more open looks, thanks to the Celtics’ abundance of big men this season
- Kevin Garnett is looking healthier than he did last season
- Blake Griffin is hungry, healthy, champing at the bit to get the season started and a better-rounded player thanks to his time off
