The quickly approaching Dec. 25 start to the somewhat unexpected 2011-12 NBA season means fantasy owners are like students cramming for a big exam. Here are a few tidbits to help you ace your drafts:

Love will have to lift less weight off the ground when grabbing 'bounds this season. (Flickr/Keith Allison)

Kevin Love is reportedly “25 pounds lighter than when he left following last season.” This bodes well for his ability to maintain, if not exceed, his stellar fantasy value from last season. I can’t see any reason why Love would fall out of the top five spots in any fantasy basketball draft this season.

Vince Carter is expected to be waived by the Phoenix Suns, which opens up the door (as expected) for Jared Dudley to step in and start. In 15 starts last season, Dudley averaged 51.8% FG, 77% FT, 1.7 3PTM, 16.3 Pts, 5.9 Reb, 2.2 Ast, 2.1 Stl, 0.5 Blk, 1.2 TO. In the 65 games he played (15 of which he started, 50 of which he came off the bench) from Dec. 2, 2010, through the end of last season, Dudley put up top 80 value. Call him a sleeper if you want, but Dudley should’ve already been on your radars. He’ll be a bargain if he falls into the last quarter of your draft. Carter, meanwhile, could land on a team in need of a SG, but don’t be fooled — his days of being a reliably productive fantasy asset are over.

Andrew Bynum appears to have improved his game and strengthened his body during the extended offseason: “He lost 10 pounds to take a load off his knees while losing more body fat than Kevin Durant even carries. He strengthened his core and the muscles all around his knees, so critical for him to improve his base and make powerful moves when so weak in those knees. He ditched all the insecurities over sub-par conditioning and poor lateral movement that led him to rush things and get out of sync with his team. He focused on developing quicker moves (drop steps, spin moves, one-dribble jump hooks, even the Dream Shake) and locked in on free throws, too.” Don’t drink the whole cup of Kool-Aid, but this is much better than where he was at the start of last season. (Also, remember that Bynum is suspended for the first five games of the season, thanks to his cheap shot on J.J. Barea in the Lakers’ disgraceful exit from the playoffs last season.)

Chris Bosh is “bulkier” and more open to playing center for the Miami Heat this season. He sounds ready to bang the boards more and said “there shouldn’t be a season where I don’t average 10 rebounds.” This sounds great, but I’ll believe it when I see it. Regardless, Bosh remains a helpful fantasy player.

This is yet another reminder not to draft Wilson Chandler, J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin, Patty Mills or Aaron Brooks this season, unless circumstances change. They’re stuck in China — but they’re trying to get out.

Roy Hibbert put on 15 pounds of muscle and worked with Tim Duncan during the offseason. Maybe Duncan is the next Hakeem Olajuwon, maybe he’s not. Regardless, this is good news for Hibbert’s fantasy prospects in 2011-12. He started last season strong then faded into maddening inconsistency, but maybe the extra meat on his bones and lessons learned will help him with that. It’s also comforting to know making cameos on “Parks and Recreation” wasn’t the only thing on Hibbert’s offseason to-do list.

Andray Blatche‘s shoulder still isn’t 100 percent. “Shoulder is about 75, 80 percent. It’s still getting better,” according to Blatche. This is bad news — probably not dire, but definitely not heartening.

Paul George added 8 pounds of muscle, is focused on defense and was ready to go “at a moment’s notice whenever the lockout ended.” His sleeper status is even more appropriate now.

Lawson's fantasy value is safe this season. (Flickr/GAMEFACE-PHOTOS)

Denver Nuggets coach George Karl said Ty Lawson is “ready to be a 30-35 minute player.” In 31 starts last season, Lawson averaged 50.9% FG, 85.1% FT, 1.2 3PTM, 14.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 6.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 2.1 turnovers in 32:06 per game. Fears about Andre Miller‘s impact on Lawson’s potential stud status should be set aside. Karl said he’ll deploy both point guards on the court together at times, so Miller should retain some value.

Ed Davis gained about 18 pounds of muscle and could find himself playing center for the Raptors this season. James Johnson improved his jumper and is focused on defense. Both players could be huge bargains near the end of your drafts.

Despite declaring himself 100 percent, Anderson Vaerjao‘s foot still gets sore after a tough workout. He’s still a sleeper, but expect a lot of rust, especially early on.

Michael Redd is out two weeks with a strained knee – yes, the same one that was surgically repaired last season. For fantasy owners who drafted him, you had to know Redd was at risk at sitting out chunks of games at a time so this shouldn’t be too big of a surprise. Charlie Bell seems to be the most obvious beneficiary from this situation. He started last night and finished with 11 points, 5 boards, 3 assists, a steal and a three in 34:11. Brandon Jennings, who is off to a great start, will also benefit from more looks. He hoisted 23 shots last night, compared to the 15.5 he was averaging in the two games before, and finished with 25 points. Andrew Bogut also saw more shots and minutes and finished with his best game of the season, notching 16 points, 13 rebounds, a steal and 3 blocks. Hakim Warrick moved into the starting five last night and will be worthy of a starting fantasy spot in most leagues so long as Redd is out. Carlos Delfino will also benefit from more minutes and shots, though his numbers will only be appealing in deeper leagues.

Yi is hurt and so are his owners. (Flickr/NBANets)

Yi Jianlian could miss up to six weeks with a sprained right knee, which is a huge bummer for owners hoping for a breakout year for the frustrating forward. Chris Douglas-Roberts and Terrence Williams are the clear winners here, as both should be good for a solid mix of points, boards, threes and steals, though CDR does shoot better percentages. Bobby Simmons could also be worthy of some monitoring, though his value should be appealing only to those in deeper leagues.

Antawn Jamison was shooting before Tuesday’s game, which is a good sign of his recovery from a shoulder injury. While he has mentioned that his knee is in pain because of a lack of conditioning recently, that shouldn’t be cause for much concern. He looks nearly ready to return and could put a dent in Andray Blatche‘s value, which has soared while Jamison’s been out. If there’s a time to sell high on Blatche, it’s now, though he’ll still have decent value when the Wizards return to full strength.

Pau Gasol may return to the Lakers’ rotation on Friday after sitting out the beginning of the season with a hamstring injury, though his owners would do well to wait until happily inserting him into their lineups that night. His return will be a damper on Lamar Odom‘s value, since he’ll lose the starting spot that he’s done so well with. Andrew Bynum will see fewer minutes, but he shouldn’t lose too much of his value, depending on how coach Phil Jackson decides to order his roster and distribute minutes. Sell high on Odom if possible, but don’t sell yourself too short if you’re looking to move Bynum. Keeping him probably isn’t such a bad idea.

Tracy McGrady is scheduled for an MRI on his knee on Nov. 23, but besides that there’s not much else to get excited about with him. He could be worthy of stashing on the end of your roster in deep leagues, but in shallower leagues there are plenty of better options to keep on your bench right now. If you happen to own him when he returns, treat him like a hot potato and trade him as soon as he puts together a string of three or four solid games.

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey has been spouting with cautious optimism for his two stars, Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady.

Morey recently told ESPN The Magazine that Yao “is progressing well.” He added that the doctors “know that the bone will heal and he’ll get back on it. And they have not actually ruled out [his return] this season. I think that’s less likely than likely, but they haven’t ruled it out.”

Is T-Mac on track to being a reliable fantasy force? Don't count on it. (Flickr/Keith Allison)

He also spoke well of McGrady’s progress, according to Jonathan Feigen at the Houston Chronicle. ”He’s way, way ahead of schedule… He’s already playing. I don’t think anyone could have predicted he would be playing now. He still has a long way to go. There is a lot of rust to shake off… I don’t expect to see him ready for Day 1 of training camp.”

It might be tempting to read into these statements and eye Yao or T-Mac as late-round picks to surprise and impress your opponents with your boldness, but don’t give in to that temptation.

Yao should not be drafted at all, while McGrady might be a decent waiver wire pick later on in the season, unless you’re in a deep league or are willing to stash him on your bench until he might return. When he returns to the court, he’s a hot potato you’ll want to trade away after a string of three or four consecutive solid games.

It’s understandable that Morey wants to keep the team’s fans (and himself) hopeful, and most likely wants to help ticket sales as much as possible, but for fantasy purposes his recent comments should be ignored.

The Ricky Rubio drama is finally over: he’s heading to FC Barcelona (as previously reported) and won’t be available to the NBA until 2011. A fifth overall pick for the Minnesota Timberwolves has come to naught, which is a tragedy for the team’s thirsty fans, as well as for any NBA fan who was excited to see how the much-hyped youngster would fare with the big boys. This, of course, means that Rubio has absolutely no fantasy relevance this season. It also means that Jonny Flynn‘s stock just rose a bit.

Erik at Points in the Paint takes a thorough look at Flynn’s value this season (and explains the “Mike Conley Jr. Effect”). His assessment of Flynn as “a 3rd-string PG for your fantasy team” is conservative, but correct. Flynn is an appealing player this year and will probably be scooped up too early in many drafts on the heel of this news. He’s an undersized rookie at 6-feet tall, and most rookies struggle with inconsistency and the infamous “wall” toward the latter half of the season.

Keep your eye on Flynn, but don’t rely on him as your primary fantasy point guard.

Amar’e Stoudemire took to the court for the first time Tuesday since having surgery to remove fluid from his right eye six weeks ago, according to Paul Coro at azcentral.com. He had surgery on that eye back in February to repair a detached retina. Though Stoudemire was limited to shooting and conditioning on Tuesday, the Phoenix Suns head athletic trainer, Aaron Nelson, said he should be ready for pickup games in two weeks. Chances are, Stoudemire will be ready to go at the start of the season, and after a frustrating summer filled with recovery and trade rumors, expect STAT to have an even bigger chip on his shoulder this year.

Mike Dunleavy appears closer to returning after having surgery on his right knee in March. Back then, he wasn’t expected to return until 2010, but there seems to be more hope of a return by the beginning of the season, according to Mike Wells at IndyStar.com. Dunleavy dunked for the first time Tuesday. When healthy, the versatile guard-forward is a key player for the Indiana Pacers and a potential top-25 fantasy player. Don’t knock him up your draft list just yet – if the team is careful with him, a 2010 return is still likely. Monitor Dunleavy’s progress and don’t forget about him just yet.

Al Jefferson said he is “90 percent” recently, adding that “I know for a fact that I will be ready for training camp. I will be 100 percent, nonstop, I’ll go two-a-days,” according to Sid Hartman at StarTribune.com. The stud forward-center for the Minnesota Timberwolves missed the last 32 games of last season because of a right knee injury. is an absolute fantasy monster. His health is, of course, a major concern. If Jefferson really is 100 percent by the start of the season, it’s easy to make the case that he’s a top-10 pick. It seems very likely that Jefferson will be ready to go at full-speed by game one of the season, so feel free to place his name high on your draft list.

Blake Griffin has practiced shooting while avoiding contact drills after straining his right shoulder last month, according to Mark Medina at LATimes.com. The overall first pick of this year’s NBA draft seems poised to put up decent numbers for the Los Angeles Clippers this season, and this little bump in the road shouldn’t hinder him at all. Don’t go crazy and draft Griffin too high, but he’s definitely worth a utility or bench spot on most fantasy rosters this year.

(Flickr/Keith Allison)

Agent Zero has probably fallen out of favor, and maybe off the radar for many fantasy basketball fans, especially those who have been burned by him in the past two seasons. However, early signs seem to indicate that Gilbert Arenas is healthy and ready to be the high-scoring, electrifying point guard for the Washington Wizards again. Steve Alexander of Rotoworld.com thinks that Arenas could very well be drafted in the third round: ”I think taking a gamble on him in the third round makes sense, as he could end up providing first-round value.” With a well-rounded, healthy roster this season, if Arenas is indeed healthy, he’ll be the reason why many owners smack their foreheads in the first month of the season. He seems like a prime candidate to be early trade bait if you’re more risk averse but decide to grab him early.

Michael Redd only played 33 games last season before going down with a left knee injury, which required surgery. He hasn’t received much attention lately, but he may warrant a look in the middle to late rounds of most drafts. ”The doctors have told me that absolutely I will be able to come back stronger than I was before, if I rehab the proper way,” Redd said in an interview with the Journal Sentinel. There doesn’t seem to be a set timetable just yet, so don’t get your hopes up for a fully healthy Redd to be ready by the beginning of the season. At best, it seems reasonable to expect that Redd will be ready to come off the bench for the Milwaukee Bucks by the season opener. Redd could be a huge help to get your team into solid playoff contention. Don’t disregard him in your drafts.

Marcin Gortat, the backup center for the Orlando Magic who got way more attention (and money) than he deserved this summer, has apparently suffered a back injury while playing for the Polish national team in London on Friday. According to a British blogger, Gortat is expected to be out for five to seven days. Back injuries tend to linger, especially bad ones, but Gortat seems to have dodged a bullet here. Still, if you are in a deeper league and are thinking about drafting the Polish Hammer, monitor this situation.

On Friday, Yao Ming decided to have major surgery on his left foot, which most likely signals the premature end of the 2009-10 NBA season. The surgery is similar to the one Zydrunas Ilgauskas had a while back. Yao is slated to go under the knife next week.

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise since this was the expected outcome for a while now. There is speculation that the injury-plagued Yao, 28, may be planning an early retirement from professional basketball, especially after the purchase of his former basketball club, the Shanghai Sharks. However, he insists that he will return to the NBA when he can.

From a fantasy perspective, this is big news. Yao, when healthy, is easily the most valuable pure center in the league, fantasy-wise. With centers already a rarity, fantasy leagues will likely see more reaching for centers than usual in this year’s draft.

For the Houston Rockets this news spells big trouble. When you look at their current roster, it looks like the 6-foot-6 power forward Chuck Hayes will likely have to step in and command some major minutes in the center position, where he’ll be vastly undersized. The 6-foot-7 Carl Landry and the 6-foot-9 Luis Scola, both forwards, will have to help out as well.

The Rockets, in anticipation of Yao’s absence, acquired the rights to Australian big man David Andersen on Wednesday. Andersen, 29, will be helpful if only because he’s 6-foot-11. He averaged 11.1 points and 4.1 rebounds with Regal FC Barcelona during the 2008-09 season. Those aren’t stunning numbers, and Andersen probably won’t see huge minutes right away, but at least the Rockets have someone tall to stick in at center from time to time.

Fantasy impact:

Hayes will see way more minutes than the 12:05 he averaged per game last season, so his production will benefit from Yao’s absence. He’s a tough player who will get rebounds, but his small size will work against him on many nights. Don’t lean on him too heavily.

Landry will see more minutes than the 21:18 he saw per game last year, so expect his numbers to increase slightly. He’s an active player who isn’t afraid to mix it up inside and has shown that he can produce in limited playing time, but he’ll also be challenged by playing against bigger players more often.

Scola will see more minutes than the 30:18 per game he averaged last season and he’ll likely benefit by seeing many more touches in the post. He also becomes the most skilled of the big men on the Rockets, which means that defenses will hone in on him a lot harder. His value may be stagnant. His points will likely increase, but so will his turnovers. Also expect his field goal percentage to take a hit.

Andersen remains a mystery. Give him about three to four weeks before you judge his value. His value may rise as the season progresses.

Brian Cook may see more playing time as a result of Yao’s absence, but his value remains minimal at best. He’s a shooter who won’t replace Yao’s post presence. Still, keep an eye on his minutes and production.

Joey Dorsey, the second-year power forward, will see more minutes. He averaged 0.7 points and 0.3 rebounds in 2:06 per game last season. However, during five games in this year’s Summer League, Dorsey has averaged 9.8 points on 56.5 percent shooting and 14.8 rebounds per game. Those numbers can’t be ignored, especially with Yao now out for an extended period of time. Feel free to place Dorsey’s name on your list of sleepers this year.

Trevor Ariza‘s value now becomes a lot more of a mystery. Yes, he’ll see plenty more minutes and shots now, but without a post player to demand attention and open up lanes and looks, Ariza appears to be a prime target for defenses to focus on. His shooting percentages will likely be weighed down by Yao’s absence.

Shane Battier, who is at his offensive best when he spots up for open three-pointers, will see fewer of these opportunities with Yao gone. Expect his offensive value, already negligible, to take a hit.

Rookie Chase Budinger, 6-foot-7, could see more playing time than expected this season, but should not be counted on for anything meaningful.
