Mock Draft Results and Analysis: Dec. 15 (H2H, 9 Cats)

by on Dec.16, 2011, under Mock drafts

In the midst of all the NBA insanity lately, I cleared a couple hours last night to participate in my first mock draft of the season. Here were the settings:

  • 12 teams
  • 14 rounds/roster spots (1 PG, 1 SG, 1 G, 1 SF, 1 PF, 1 F, 2 C, 3 Util, 3 Bench)
  • Time per pick: 60 seconds
  • Assumptions: head-to-head, nine categories

We had 12 humans sign up for it, but two didn’t show and one got to the draft late. Regardless, I’m happy that so many readers were able to take part in this mock draft on such short notice.

Here’s a quick recap and analysis of the mock draft, with picks I liked in green and picks I didn’t like in red. (Auto-selected picks were not given color judgments — except for one.) (continue reading…)

Roundup: 2011-12 Fantasy Basketball Team Previews

by on Oct.27, 2011, under Other, Team analysis

Karl Malone

Special delivery.

In case you haven’t noticed, yesterday we finished our previews/analyses of each NBA team for what I’m tentatively referring to “2011-12.” I suppose celebrating this accomplishment is akin to hitting a technical free throw and low-fiving imaginary teammates.

Though I’ll spare you the confetti and balloons, I do want to offer this: a simple list of all 30 fantasy basketball team previews. You can also access it atop the website, no matter what page you’re on.

Here’s what’s included in every team preview:

  • depth chart (free agents and players locked into overseas contracts are noted)
  • list of relevant fantasy players with projected per-game stats
  • sleeper
  • player most likely to surprise
  • player most likely to disappoint
  • category specialists
  • things to consider
  • the team’s statistical ranks in 2010-11
  • fantasy-friendliness grade
  • fun bonus video

Now I’ll be working on updating those rankings.

Fantasy Basketball: Back to School for a Season That May Not Happen

by on Sep.02, 2011, under Other

DeMarcus Cousins

DeMarcus looks ready to head back to school. Are you? (NBA/Getty Images)

We’re on the cusp of Labor Day weekend, which means students who haven’t already started their new school year are now seeing their summer vacation quickly slipping away. If there’s any solace for students wincing at the thought of going back to school, it’s that they can rest assured that the 2011-12 school year is actually happening. While that may not be much of a comforting thought in and of itself, the start of a school year means graduation is closer than it was yesterday. Imagine if an entire school year were put on hold: While visions of an extended “summer break” are certainly enchanting, it would mean that students would commence their education a year older than they should be, and that graduating and heading off to that coveted next stage of life would be put on a maddening hold. The Top 150 Fantasy Basketball Players for 2011-12

by on Jul.13, 2011, under Rankings

Fantasy Basketball Inception

In "2011-12" we might witness fantasy basketball in its truest form.

The NBA lockout has been about as horrifying as sitting in between two of your friends who spontaneously decide to make out with each other in public. Of course, if those two friends were the NBA Players Association and the NBA owners, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

Before you start thinking too much about James Dolan getting intimate with Derek Fisher, let’s move on to the point of this post.

Fantasy basketball is, thankfully, immune to such silly things as lockouts. But what the NBA lockout does mean is that any projections made for what we call “2011-12″ are made for a season that might not happen. In other words, we’re making forecasts about fantasy basketball for a season that might not even exist — a season that may be, in fact, a fantasy.

A fantasy within a fantasy — fantasy basketball in the truest sense.

Without further ado, here are my early rankings for the top 150 fantasy basketball players in “2011-12.” (continue reading…)
