Terrence Williams will be picked up in a lot of leagues this morning, but how much optimism should he deserve? Head over to DimeMag.com to read my take on yesterday’s three-team deal that had the New Jersey Nets send Williams to the Houston Rockets and Joe Smith to the Los Angeles Lakers. In return, the Nets will receive Sasha Vujacic from the Lakers along with a 2011 first-round pick, and a Lottery-protected 2012 first-round pick from the Rockets. The Rockets also sent Jermaine Taylor to the Sacramento Kings for a future second-round pick in order to make room for Williams.

According to the Associated Press, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili of the San Antonio Spurs have been taking the summer to recuperate their bodies:

Duncan, hobbled by knee problems down the stretch and in the playoffs, has pushed back the normal start of his normal preseason regimen by a month. The 33-year-old will begin workouts next week that the All-Star typically gets going in early August.

Ginobili, meanwhile, has limited his summer activity to a treadmill and some walks after appearing in just 44 games last season because of bad ankles.

“He is healthy,” Popovich said. “He’ll come back out of shape but healthy.”

Duncan has delayed his preseason regimen to give his body a chance to rest. (Flickr/Geoff Livingston)

This bodes well for both Duncan and Ginobili, but don’t expect to see their production dramatically increase this season. Popovich does a great job of managing his stars’ minutes during the regular season to keep them fresh for the playoffs. Expect Duncan to play around 33 minutes a game, while Ginobili shouldn’t see more than 31 minutes a game. Still, both players have been fantasy studs for a while now – don’t expect that to change this season.

Alan Hahn at Newsday.com reports that Danilo Gallinari, the New York Knicks rookie who missed almost all of last season with back problems, is looking good this summer in Europe. ”Gallo is telling people that he feels great and is virtually pain-free” Hahn writes. The word to worry over is “virtually.” Backs are touchy things that can act up without notice for a player’s entire career, so don’t go bonkers over this report. If Gallinari is healthy this season, expect him to be productive some nights and totally off on others. Don’t bother thinking about him unless you’re in deeper leagues.

Joe Smith has officially signed on with the Atlanta Hawks, according to Hawks BasketBlog. The signing is great for the Hawks, who welcome a humble, helpful veteran who gives you what you expect each night. Smith should make for a great backup for Al Horford and Josh Smith. Micah Hart aptly notes that “If there is any downside to this signing, it’s that the similarity of names (Joe Johnson, Joe Smith, Josh Smith) on the Hawks roster will potentially make discussing them very confusing.” From a fantasy perspective, Smith should be good for about 7 points and 4 rebounds a night, which makes him valuable only in deeper leagues.
