Boston Celtics: Team analysis

by on Aug.04, 2009, under Team analysis

Studs: Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo

Duds: Rasheed Wallace

The Boston Celtics probably aren’t on too many people’s short list of NBA championship contenders this season, but that doesn’t mean the team in green doesn’t have a lot to offer, especially in fantasy terms.

Their roster isn’t solidified just yet, but the addition of Wallace and, most recently, Shelden Williams (also known as the guy who married Candace Parker) gives them more frontcourt depth, which is especially necessary given the pending departure of Glen Davis.  The Celtics are also in the midst of acquiring forward Marquis Daniels, but are said to be considering signing Bruce Bowen instead.  Daniels would seem to be a better signing – he’s more talented and younger, which is important for this aging crew of veterans.

Besides that, everyone knows that the story here is what Pierce, Garnett, Allen and Rondo will do this year.  Pierce (who remains the Celtics’ best fantasy player) and Allen shouldn’t see their values change too much, while Garnett is a big question mark.  It appears he’s recovering well, but he definitely isn’t the same KG that was a king in the fantasy world for so many years.  Expect him to miss a handful of games this season.  Rondo, who many crowned as the next big thing after his stellar playoffs performance, will likely see a nice bump up in his value this season.

Besides those four, Wallace may offer some nice overall value here and there, but probably won’t be consistent enough to be worth a high pick and will not be as valuable as he was on the Detroit Pistons.  Kendrick Perkins could lose some minutes to Wallace but his value stems from rebounds and blocks, which he should still be able to accumulate in sufficient bunches.

Relevant fantasy players and projected per-game stats:

PG: Rajon Rondo (15 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals)

SG: Ray Allen (17 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2.5 threes)

SF: Paul Pierce (19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 1.5 threes)

PF: Kevin Garnett (15 points, 8 rebounds, 3.5 assists)

C: Kendrick Perkins (7 points, 8 rebounds, 2.0 blocks)

Bench: Rasheed Wallace (10 points, 6 rebounds, 1.5 threes), Eddie House (8 points, 2 threes)
