It’s finally here, the way we wanted it and the way we expected it at the start of this strange NBA season: The Oklahoma City Thunder will lock horns with the Miami Heat in the 2012 NBA Finals, a matchup that features seven of the top 50 fantasy basketball players in the 2011-12 NBA season (LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade, Serge Ibaka, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Chris Bosh).

The poll that’s been up on the home page of this site since the beginning of the season shows that 35 percent of you thought the Heat would win this season’s championship, while 14 percent thought the Thunder would. Granted, perceptions and realities have changed since then: the Thunder look more sure-footed and ready than they did earlier in the season, while LeBron is in full-on Hulk mode.

What strikes me about the matchup, among many other facets that have already been mentioned by others, is that this is a clash of the organic and the inorganic — the natural vs. the unnatural, the honest way vs. the shortcut. (continue reading…)

Daily Fantasy Basketball Recap: 4.23.12 (Weekend Review)

by on Apr.23, 2012, under Quick hits

Ty Lawson

Weekend Wonder: Ty Lawson averaged 21.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 10.0 assists, 0.5 steals and 3.0 threes in two games over the weekend. He shot 58 percent from the floor and 100 percent from the free-throw line in this stretch, while averaging 0.5 turnovers per game. For the season, Lawson has been a top 25 stud, which is on the high end of expectations heading into this season’s drafts. He’ll be a stud again next season.

Lines for Discussion:
Serge Ibaka (4/20): 6-11 FG (55%), 12 Pts, 6 Reb, 1 Ast, 8 Blk, 1 TO; he’s going to be a killer keeper

Kenneth Faried (4/21): 9-13 FG (69%), 18 Pts, 14 Reb, 2 Ast, 1 Stl, 3 Blk; Faried is averaging 11.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.4 blocks this month

LeBron James (4/22): 11-21 FG (52%), 9-10 FT (90%), 1 three, 32 Pts, 8 Reb, 5 Ast, 1 Stl, 2 Blk, 5 TO; barring a huge finish to the season from Kevin Durant, James will finish the season as the No. 1 fantasy basketball player of the 2011-12 NBA season  (continue reading…)

Daily Fantasy Basketball Recap: 4.16.12 (Weekend Review)

Wesley Matthews

Weekend Wonder: Wesley Matthews averaged 23.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals, 0.5 blocks and 4.5 three-pointers in two games over the weekend. He hit 50 percent of his shots from the field and 100 percent of his shots from the charity stripe, and averaged 2.5 turnovers in each of those games. Matthews has struggled with major bouts of inconsistency this season, but he’s still maintained top 60 value, mostly thanks to his strong three-point making (1.9 per game) and thieving (1.4 per game).

Lines for Discussion:
Marcus Camby (4/13): 7-16 FG (44%), 14 Pts, 18 Reb, 4 Ast, 2 Stl, 3 Blk; since joining the Rockets, Camby has averaged 6.9 points, 9.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.7 blocks per game — but he’s injured again

Andre Iguodala (4/13): 3-7 FG (43%), 5-6 FT (83%), 11 Pts, 4 Reb, 4 Ast, 1 Stl, 3 TO; Iggy is averaging a mediocre 10.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.9 assists, 1.7 steals, 0.7 blocks and 0.6 threes per game so far this month

Serge Ibaka (4/14): 3-5 FG (60%), 2-2 FT (100%), 8 Pts, 12 Reb, 2 Ast, 5 Blk, 1 TO; through nine games in April, Ibaka is averaging 8.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and an insane 5.3 blocks per game; he’s been a top 12 beast this season (continue reading…)

Daily Fantasy Basketball Recap: 3.8.12

James Harden

Beast of the Night: James Harden posted 30 points, four rebounds, one assist, two steals, two blocks and four three-pointers last night. He shot 67 percent (8-12) from the field, 91 percent (10-11) from the free-throw line and had one turnover. Harden has been a top 25 fantasy stud so far this season, which is extra impressive given that he’s the non-starter in that bunch.

Lines for Discussion:
Blake Griffin: 9-15 FG (60%), 10-17 FT (59%), 28 Pts, 17 Reb, 2 Ast, 2 Stl, 1 Blk, 2 TO; after a five-game drought of blocks, Griffin has blocked at least one shot in each of his last four games

John Wall: 1-8 FG (13%), 2-4 FT (50%), 4 Pts, 2 Reb, 9 Ast, 1 Blk, 5 TO; Wall has shown noticeable improvement as the season has worn on and has worked himself back into top 75 shape

DeMar DeRozan: 8-16 FG (50%), 7-8 (88%), 23 Pts, 3 Reb, 4 Ast, 1 Stl; DeRozan is on a hot streak, averaging 23.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 steal and 0.7 threes in his last three games (continue reading…)

Daily Fantasy Basketball Recap: 2.24.12

by on Feb.24, 2012, under Quick hits

Kevin Durant, Pau Gasol

KD does it again. (AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)

Beast of the Night: Kevin Durant finished the first half of the season to the tune of 33 points, four rebounds, six assists, three steals, one block and two three-pointers. He shot 55 percent (12-22) from the field, 100 percent (7-7) from the charity stripe and had two turnovers. Durant has been a stud, as expected, so far this season. He’s improved his field-goal percentage, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks from their marks in his 2010-11 campaign.

Lines for Discussion:
Jeremy Lin: 1-11 FG (9%), 6-6 FT (100%), 8 Pts, 6 Reb, 3 Ast, 3 Stl, 8 TO; the All-Star break should do him good, and Lin’s owners should hope coach Mike D’Antoni limits his point guard’s minutes to a sustainable level going forward

Andre Miller: 7-10 FG (70%), 5-6 FT (83%), 1 three, 20 Pts, 1 Reb, 7 Ast, 1 Stl, 2 TO; Miller has been unsteady this month but remains a guy worth having on your bench in most leagues

Serge Ibaka: 5-10 FG (50%), 1-2 FT (50%), 11 Pts, 13 Reb, 3 Blk; he’s averaging 9.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 4.4 blocks in 14 games this month (continue reading…)
