Beast of the Night: Dwight Howard put up 13 points, 20 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 4 blocks and 3 turnovers in 33 minutes of an easy victory over the Rockets last night. He shot 71 percent (5-7) from the floor and 75 percent (3-4) from the free throw line. His scoring, rebounding and blocks are down this year, and his turnovers are up from last season, but you know what you’re getting with Howard.

Weekend Wonder: Zach Randolph was a monster this past weekend, averaging 29 points, 20 rebounds, 3 assists, 0.5 steals, 2 blocks and 3.5 turnovers in two games. He shot 59 percent from the field and 90 percent from the free throw line. Randolph had 32/24 on Sunday, when he even hit a three. Sell high if you can, but don’t be surprised if he continues to impress as the season wears on.

Notable lines:
Gilbert Arenas (12/18) – 15-25 FG (60%), 11-16 FT (69%), 4 3ptm, 45 Pts, 3 Reb, 13 Ast, 1 Blk, 5 TO

Caron Butler (12/18) – 13-22 FG (59%), 2-2 FT (100%), 28 Pts, 10 Reb, 2 Ast, 5 Stl, 2 TO

Marreese Speights (12/19) – 11-20 FG (55%), 6-9 FT (67%), 28 Pts, 9 Reb, 1 Ast, 1 TO

Chain gang: Bucks, 76ers, Players to target, Tips

by on Sep.15, 2009, under Chain gang

  • Erik discusses the Milwaukee Bucks on Give Me The Rock as part of a series of looks at NBA teams ravaged by “The Four Horsemen.”

“Sifting through its roster is like making a list for an all-late-round-draft team,” Erik writes. “You know a team has a bad roster, when Luke Ridnour – LUKE RIDNOUR! – and Hakim Warrick are the guys that appear to be the most appealing to draft.”

While he expresses caution regarding Michael Redd and Andrew Bogut, he does point out a sleeper on the Bucks roster and mentions three players to keep your eyes on during the beginning of the season.
  • Tommy Beer at Hoopsworld takes a gander at the Philadelphia 76ers.  He points out the obvious allure of Louis Williams at the starting point guard spot this season, but also takes a bit of a leap and expresses confidence in Elton Brand more or less returning to form this year.
  • Evil E at RotoEvil.com gives a preview of RotoEvil’s Draft Guide, which includes a section about “50 Players to Target.” He splits these players up into four categories and offers an in-depth look at Trevor Ariza.
  • Tip #22 was posted yesterday at FourPointPlay, continuing a list of interesting, engaging and helpful tips for fantasy fiends, new or old. Take a look and see what you think.

Odom stays with Lakers

by on Jul.31, 2009, under Free agents

Lamar Odom signed a four-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers yesterday for up to $33 million, “if the Lakers exercise their option on the fourth season,” according to ESPN.com.  (This is within my expectations expressed in an earlier post.)

This isn’t a huge surprise, though Odom had been courted by the Miami Heat and the Portland Trail Blazers.  Dwyane Wade, the Heat’s star guard, had been pulling for Odom to return “home,” but expressed happiness for Odom on his Twitter.

For the Lakers, this solidifies their position as the front-runner in the Western Conference.  While losing Trevor Ariza was a big hit, signing Ron Artest was a solid move and the re-signing of Odom gives them a dynamic frontcourt.

Odom will likely see his fantasy value remain about where it was last year, when he averaged 11.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.0 steal and 1.3 blocks in 29:41 per outing, the fewest per-game minutes he’s seen in his career.  Artest’s presence will keep Odom’s value muted, though it shouldn’t cause it to drop much, if at all.

He’s no one to scoff at, but keep your expectations for Odom in line with last season.  If Andrew Bynum, Pau Gasol or Artest go down with an injury, look for Odom to take advantage of the extra playing time.
